About

Ann is committed to providing tax advice of the highest quality in a business-like and straightforward way. Fee structures are flexible and her charging rates are competitive.
Ann was admitted as a solicitor in 1977. She has an MBA, a Master’s in law, and worked for 16 years as a tax lawyer in the City, including time as a corporate tax partner at law firm Richards Butler (now Reed Smith LLP). In 1993, Ann decided to set up her own practice, Ann L Humphrey, to specialise in business tax, property tax and VAT.
Ann is widely recognised as an authority on stamp duty land tax (SDLT) and has co-written one of the leading books on the subject. The Legal Experts Directory 2012 listed her as an expert in the field of VAT and indirect tax. In 2016 Ann won Tolley Taxation’s ‘Tax Writer of the Year’ award for her ‘proven ability to write knowledgeably about technical tax issues in the professional press, online and in book form’.
Outside of work, Ann enjoys watching tennis and has been to the Australian Open, Wimbledon, Roland Garros and Queens. She is a bit of a foodie and is studying for the Wine and Spirits Education Trust Diploma. Ann is also an avid bookworm and theatregoer and is trying her hand at writing poetry.
Ann’s Credentials
Ann is knowledgeable, experienced and always up-to-date.
Ann’s expertise has built up as a result of working with a variety of clients across a range of industries. Her clients have included insurance companies, universities, law firms, small businesses, accountants and private individuals.
Sometimes, her advice goes wider than tax law. For example, when a large law firm for which Ann had been doing ad hoc tax consultancy lost both its only tax partner and his assistant in rapid succession, Ann stepped in as acting head of the tax group and managed the tax workload for six months on a part-time basis. She also helped to recruit a replacement tax partner, taking part in the interview process and assessing the technical competence of the candidates.
Ann is a member of the following professional organisations:
- Law Society
- VAT Practitioners Group
- Stamp Taxes Practitioners Group
- Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers
- Ethical Property Foundation
Ann also has an informal network of other like-minded professionals in the UK and elsewhere whose services she can call on as and when required. Ann provides tax advice on a pro bono basis to selected charities.
